Makeup Features Completed; Rains Hit Rice Lake Speedway Again

By Ed Reichert

RICE LAKE, WI (July 30) - The four makeup feature races left over from the power outage/thunderstorm night of July 23 were completed and heat races were run before another powerful thunderstorm struck the Rice Lake area and forced track officials to once again postpone the main events one week. Thus, for the second straight week and third time this season, double feature races in all five classes will be run on Saturday, August 6.

A severe morning thunderstorm left nearly an inch of rain in its wake and saturated the speedway grounds, but track crews were able to get the track into racing condition for the four makeup feature races.

The Midwest Modifieds were up first and visitor George Dalbeck led the first half of the race and it looked like he might win his first ever feature race at Rice Lake. However, Cory Crapser picked up the pace, gradually closed in on Dalbeck, then moved to the bottom side of the track to take over the lead. Once in front, Crapser pulled away in what turned out to be a nonstop main event. Dalbeck continued his strong pace and finished in the runner up slot, while the Viltz brothers battled for third; Tito edged Ryan and Zach Manley, who completed the top five. It was Crapser’s third win of the year at Rice Lake.

Heartbreak hit Cody Kummer in the Street Stock feature. Kummer had made some great moves and took advantage of some openings to move from the third row into the early lead in the makeup feature race. He had opened up almost a straightaway lead while there was a huge group of cars battling for second. What Kummer didn’t need was a yellow and what he needed even less than that was for himself to cause that yellow, but he rolled to a halt in turn three with a flat right, front tire.

After a smooth first five laps, the rest of the Street Stock feature was rocky at best with with spin after spin slowing the action; five more yellow flags kept the pace slow and the drivers anxious. Eventually Sam Fankhauser found an opening on the high side of the track and he rode the cushion into the lead. Doug Wojcik moved into second and tried to chase down Sam in the final laps but he couldn’t catch him. The race, appropriately finished under the yellow when yet another spin slowed the action after the white flag had been taken. It was Fankhauser’s first win of the year at Rice Lake. Nick Wojcik chased his brother home for the third position while Kummer went to the back of the pack following his flat tire, and with all the yellows and accompanying attrition, worked his way back into fourth at the finish ahead of Joel Hinrichs.

Tad Schoonover was the early leader in a Super Stock feature that went much smoother than the Street Stock main. However, there was some trouble early including a two car crash that eliminated challengers Aaron Wilson and Cory Karshbaum, followed by a restart in which Jason Forehand threw a driveshaft on the front chute, causing a few anxious seconds as everyone tried to avoid that missile.

Ben Hillman got up on the cushion and drove into the lead with Shane Kisling chasing him. Kisling closed in and made a serious challenge but Hillman held him off, then started to pull away again. The last 15 laps of the race went nonstop and Hillman remained comfortably in front the rest of the way, recording his third Rice Lake win of the year. Eric Olson made a late charge to notch a solid third place effort with Andy Grymala and Schoonover completing the top five.

It was condition normal for the WISSOTA Modifieds; for the ninth time this season Kevin Adams won the feature event. As usual, Adams started deep in the field on the point average system and methodically worked his way to the front from the fourth row.

Scott Hudack took the early lead in the feature race, and using the cushion, built up a good sized advantage in the early going. Adams split Mark Hanson and Tim McMann to move into third, and began to apply pressure to Brent Prochnow, who was closely following Hudack after a strong run himself.

Unfortunately that came to an end in turn three when Prochnow lost control and triggered a massive seven car crash amongst the tightly packed field which eliminated five cars from the race.

The yellow also hurt Hudack immensely; he then had Adams right on his tail. Kevin slid under Hudack on the restart and took over the lead. The second half of the race ran nonstop and Adams pulled away from the pack. Mike Anderson, who had been lagging back in the field, picked up the pace in the closing laps; he went to the bottom lane and advanced a number of spots, eventually driving past Hudack to take the second spot. McMann also made a late charge to nip Hudack for third with Eric Pember driving his damaged car home to complete the top five.

Next Saturday, August 6, Quality Cleaners & Second To None Concrete will be the presenting sponsors for the racing action. With sunny weather in the forecast, it will again be a full night of racing. Five makeup feature races, for the four WISSOTA classes plus the Rice Lake Pure Stocks will start the program off, following by a complete show for all five classes. Race time is 6:30 p.m. sharp.
