Adams Repeats In Rice Lake Speedway Race Action

By Ed Reichert

RICE LAKE, WI (May 7) – It didn’t take very long to get the first repeat winner of the 2011 racing season as Kevin Adams backed up his opening night victory in the WISSOTA Modifieds to become the first multiple winner at the Rice Lake Speedway. On a night that saw good two car battles down to the wire with three divisions decided in the closing laps, other winners included Scott Lawrence, Matt Leer, Simon Wahlstrom and George Richards.

Scott Miller is quickly getting the handle on his new race car and he took the early lead in the Modified feature, sliding into the lead from the second row ahead of Steve Stuart and Mike Anderson. Tim McMann was on the move also while Adams went to the high side of the track and charged forward after starting eighth. McMann continued on the move and he drove under Miller to take over the lead. Adams was also continuing his charge as he got past Miller and as the yellow flag flew, had edged past McMann for the lead.

|On the green, McMann slipped up the track and Adams drove under him to take over the top spot. Once in front, he gradually pulled away from the field and didn’t receive a strong challenge the rest of the way.

McMann had by far his best run in his new car too, but his apparent second place finish was scrubbed when he failed to report directly to the tech area after the event and was disqualified. This elevated Paul Brust into the runner up slot and he was followed in the official finish by Miller, Jason Swan and Dave Mayala.

The Super Stock feature got off to a rocky start when Shane Kisling broke a suspension part in turn two on the opening lap with the field bunched up. Kisling lost control and slid up the track in front of most of the field, triggering a multi car collision that eliminated Andy Grymala, Allen Amborn and himself before a lap could be completed.

When racing resumed, it was front row starters Ben Hillman and Eric Olson who battled for the lead. They raced side by side before Olson was able to edge into the top spot by using the high side of the track. Once in front, Eric opened up a small margin but was soon joined in a battle for the lead by Scott Lawrence. Lawrence found an opening on the low side of the track and got inside Olson, where they raced side by side for two laps before Olson was able to fight off the Superior racer and continue as the leader.

After a late yellow flag bunched the field again, Lawrence again got to the inside of Olson and they again raced wheel to wheel before this time, Lawrence was able to edge into the lead. Olson remained planted on Lawrence’s rear bumper the last couple of laps, but there was no opening and Olson had to settle for second behind Lawrence. Jason Forehand made the charge of the night, starting seventeenth in the main event and edging past Aaron Wilson near the end to take third with Cory Casari completing the top five.

The Midwest Modified feature saw the leaders pass and then repass twice before the decision was finalized. The opening lap started off the fireworks and the leaders when three wide down the front chute as they battled for the lead, with Shane Halopka using the inside to edge past Matt Leer on the top and Zach Manley who started on the pole and was working the middle groove. Leer pulled in to challenge Halopka for the lead with Cory Crapser, Travis Nye and Nick Koehler also in the lead swarm as about the top eight racers were locked tight together.

Exiting turn two, Leer was able to get under Halopka for the lead which he held for a few laps until he slid high in turn four and gave the top spot right back to Halopka. Meanwhile, Crapser moved in to challenge also as Bryce Johnson and Tito Viltz also started to advance.

A lap ten yellow for a spin turned into three straight yellows for other spinners. Once racing resumed, it was Leer who again made the move as he got under Halopka in turn two and retook the top spot. This time he protected the advantage, and while Halopka was right on his tail the last few laps, Leer held his line and took the win. Crapser finished a strong third trailed by Manley and Viltz.

The Street Stock feature was a wild and wooly event, with lots of trading of positions and also a little paint. Jimmy Randall used the top side to edge into the early lead with Joel Hinrichs hanging tough in second. The pack started bearing down on the leaders though, and soon there was a huge bunch of cars locked in a tight battle for the lead.

Lap three proved to be a quagmire, as the field got stuck there with four straight yellows for spins keeping the scoreboard from moving down the laps remaining.

Finally all out racing resumed, and Randall was under the gun as Sam Fankhauser looked to his high side. However, with it looking like Fankhauser might make the move by, suddenly Simon Wahlstrom, lurking back behind the front pair, came diving down to the low side, got a good run off turn four and took over the lead. The battle behind him continued to flame, and Simon was able to put a few car lengths on the field when rookie Nick Wojcik suddenly came on like gangbusters, charging into second and tracking down Wahlstrom.

Twice Wojcik got to the inside of Wahlstrom and got beside him but couldn’t pull off the pass. He dropped back slightly but then made another charge and again got inside Simon for the lead. However, Wahlstrom was up to the challenge again and fought off the persistent pressure for the lead. Wojcik was right on his quarter panel in the last corner again, but Wahlstrom remained smooth and won by a car length for only his second career Street Stock triumph. Fankhauser settled for third ahead of Danny Richards and Doug Wojcik, who came from thirteenth.

The Pure Stock feature also had a few too many yellow flag slowdowns, the worst of which were a lap one spin by Clay Potaczek where somehow everyone was able to avoid him and a later spin by Dustin Doughty where Bob Wahlstrom wasn’t able to avoid him.

Rookie Mike Schnider was the early leader of the event until he went high in turn four and George Richards drove under him for the top spot. Once in front, Richards pulled away from the field. Jamey Fisher found his way into second, but he wasn’t able to track down Richards who was strong up front and pulled away from the field. C. J. Wagner raced his way into third and was trailed by Schnider and Brandon Davis.

Next Saturday night the first special event of the season will be held. Along with a full show in all five classes that regularly race at the track, the WISSOTA sanctioned Late Models will be on hand for the first time this year. A good field of cars in that class is expected to be on hand with many of the Red Cedar Speedway regulars along with some Twin Ports cars also. Race time is 6:30 p.m.
